A
Day in the Life of a School Nurse
School Health's printed
catalog covers have featured "A Day in the Life of a School Nurse"
every year since 1992. See below for some information about each of
these catalog covers and the artist who created them.
|

|
The
Artist - Michael Hagel
Michael Hagel has been a professional artist for more than 30 years.
He was an illustrator in the Chicago area for more than 24 years.
His art has been widely known for its realistic treatment and his
accurate treatment of historical subjects. His commercial work has
been with a multitude of American corporations, from United Airlines
to the United States Postal System to School Health Corporation. His
portrait work is in a vast number of both corporate and private collections.
In 1994
Mr. Hagel was commissioned to design and illustrate five murals for
the President George H. Bush Memorial Library and Museum at College
Station, TX. Mr. Hagels' limited edition prints sell worldwide. His
interest in history has led Mr. Hagel to design and paint a number
of murals for the new Veterans' Memorial in Branson, MO and Pigeon
Forge, TN. While still doing commercial illustration, Mr. Hagel has
been devoting a lot of his time to gallery painting and adding to
his line of limited edition prints. Subject matter of his prints vary
from homespun children scenes, aircraft subjects, vintage field and
stream scenes, historical scenes, to paintings of Americas' Heartland.
Mr. Hagel has painted School Health Corporation's annual School Nurse
catalog cover since 1993. |

1992
- School
Nurse's Office
The inaugural painting of the Day in the Life of a School Nurse
series featured a school nurse taking the temperature of a student
with the first adaptation of the innovative Thermoscan ear thermometer.
|
| |

|
1993
- Good
Grief!
This scene is a favorite and perhaps the most popular as the school
nurse contemplates the seemingly endless line of ailing children
waiting to see her.
|

|
1994
- OSHA
Compliance
This cover attempted to show the important role of establishing
an OSHA-approved bloodborne pathogen plan, which was quickly becoming
a routine standard of care. Our customers focused more on the fact
that Nurse Tracy was working at her computer. Apparently, we were
a few years premature, as many of you told us that school nurses
did not have ready access to computers
yet. Today, computer
software plays a vital role in tracking health records, evaluating
required screenings and immunizations, and billing for cost recovery.
|

|
1995
- The
Playground Mishap
This scene of the school nurse tending to two students who apparently
bumped into each other is our best selling catalog cover poster.
|

|
1996
- Early
Childhood Intervention
School Health's former president, Dr. Robert Cormack, initiated
several innovative campaigns to inform health care practitioners
of chronic conditions that impact children and new technology that
can be implemented in the school setting. He sought out and invested
in early intervention products, such as the MTI Photoscreener, that
could identify health risks at a preverbal age. Identifying potential
problems in the first three years of life is critical not only in
the development of good vision and hearing but also in normal learning
skills.
|

|
1997
- Asthma
Management
As many as 5 million school aged children suffer from asthma. Since
these children spend so much of their day at school, we wanted to
call everyone's attention to the pivotal role of the school nurse
in asthma management. It seems to go without saying that when asthma
is successfully managed at school, those affected are truly free
to participate in the learning process. Conversely, when asthma
isn't being controlled effectively at school, it could lead to the
student being sent home, to the doctor or even to the hospital which
amounts to another day of lost opportunity.

|
1998
- Health
Education Day!
The seventh presentation of our Day in the Life of A School Nurse
series illustrates the crucial role the school nurse plays in the
health education/counseling process. Through our participation at
state and local meetings, we have come to appreciate the multitude
of health issues the school nurse must address. Chronic illness,
substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, inadequate physical
activity, and poor dietary habits are among such issues. The list
goes on and on, but the point is whether it's counseling a diabetic
student about proper nutrition or giving a formal presentation on
the proper procedures for administering first aid to a choking victim,
your role in education is critical.
|

|
1999
- Oral
Health Care
This topic covers a broad continuum of support, which could include
providing an overview on brushing and flossing, caring for a toothache,
easing pain from braces, and even educating students on the dangers
of smokeless tobacco.
|

|
2000
- Mock
Disaster Drill
The idea for this year's cover came from a news release about a
mock disaster exercise that took place at a Naples, Florida high
school during the summer of 1999. Today, the need for school nurses
to have a plan for sudden emergencies has never been more critical.
|
 |
2001
- CPR/AED
Training
Sudden cardiac arrest remains a concern for many institutions when
large groups of people gather. Schools are no different. This year's
cover features a school nurse demonstrating the use of an automated
external defibrillator (AED) and CPR training to parents and faculty
members. AEDs in schools can save lives.
|
 |
2002
- Scoliosis
Screening
Many school nurses spend time counseling parents and helping children
face the prospect of wearing a device that will make them appear different
from everyone else. No one knows this more than School Health's own
president, Susan Rogers.
Susan's words, "In 6th grade, my school nurse detected my
curved spine during a scoliosis screening. She referred my parents
to an orthopedic specialist and for the next three years of my life,
I was strapped in a Milwaukee brace. Because of this early detection,
my scoliosis was treated and I never experienced any further problems.
You made a difference in my life and you make a difference in the
lives of children every day." |
 |
2003
- Wash
Your Hands!
In today's world of innovation and high tech medical gadgetry, it's
hard to believe that the best way to prevent disease is still so basic
- wash your hands! School nurses know how important this simple technique
is in keeping kids healthy and in school.
|
 |
2004
- An
Apple a Day
School Nurses have knowledge and expertise in nutrition, weight maintenance
and exercise. This knowledge can be applied in prevention programs
and interventions for at-risk or overweight students. The school nurse
identifies such students and also can refer students who may not be
seeing a healthcare provider on a regular basis. In addition, the
school nurse can be involved with support programs, counseling services,
referrals, follow-up and support.

2005
- Celebrating
85 Years of BAND-AID®
This years scene departs from its normal focus on school nurses
and the chronic health conditions they take on, to highlight an important
event in the world of kids (and caregivers). Who hasnt used
a BAND-AID brand adhesive bandage? For 85 years, BAND-AID bandages
have made kids feel better, whether or not there is a cut or scrape.
From the original 3 x 18 bandage made in 1920 to todays
Advanced Healing Strips and Liquid Bandages; BAND-AID brand is the
leader in introducing innovative wound care products to consumers. |
| |

|
2006
- Ouch
Many school nurses help coordinate clinics with their local public
health departments or other groups to give required and/or recommended
immunizations. |
| |
 |
2007
- Wellness
Assessment
More and more states are requiring schools to monitor Body Mass Index
(BMI) as a means of helping students maintain wellness. School nurses
not only do the measuring, but also notify and educate students and
parents about healthy lifestyles. |
| |
 |
2008
- On
the Road Again
We all wish every school had a full-time nurse on site, but unfortunately
this is not the caseand in many states, far from it. NASN and
HHS recommend a nurse to student ratio of 1 nurse to 750 students
in the general population. Until the day arrives when a dedicated,
full-time nurse is available at every school, the mobile nurse will
be a reality. For all of you who take medical supplies on the road,
this cover is for you. |
