Introduction

During 1999, several high school athletes in Wisconsin collapsed and died during competitive sports. Project ADAM™ was conceived by David Ellis, a lifelong friend of Adam Lemel, one of the teens who died during a high school basketball game. The goal of Project ADAM™ is to make automatic external defibrillators (AED's) available at every high school. With the assistance of a number of organizations, this dream is becoming a reality.

Product Overview and Description
Defibrillation, the delivery of an electrical shock to the heart to treat ventricular fibrillation, has moved from being available only in the hospital and emergency response areas to implementation by the trained layperson by means of public access defibrillation (PAD) programming. Research has repeatedly shown that shortening the time between the onset of ventricular fibrillation and defibrillation increases survival of victims. Automatic external defibrillators (AED's) make public access defibrillation possible by allowing trained laypeople to safely and effectively defibrillate the victims of ventricular fibrillation. The goal of public access defibrillation is to have AED's readily available for use by bystanders trained in both CPR and AED use.

PROGRAM GOALS:
To foster awareness of the potential for the rare occurrence of sudden cardiac death in the adolescent population.
To encourage improvement of screening procedures prior to participation in high school sports.
To facilitate the training of high school staff and students in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and use of automatic external defibrillators (AED's).
To mobilize the necessary local, regional and state-wide resources to implement a comprehensive, workable and sustainable program for placement of AED's in high school settings.

PROGRAM MATERIALS:
The contents of this manual are designed to complement existing public access defibrillation (PAD) training materials for the use of automatic external defibrillators (AED's) in combination with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This manual provides necessary reference materials and additional skill scenarios useful for implementing a public access defibrillation program in a high school setting.

The materials include:

Book, CD-ROM, Instructor Presentation Outline, PowerPoint Visual Support Materials and References for defining the usefulness of public access defibrillation within a high school setting.
Skill Scenarios for practice.
