Introduction
The AuDX is designed to
perform distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) or transient
evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) screening. Using a combination
of hardware and software, the AuDX produces a controlled acoustic
signal in the ear canal and measures the resulting otoacoustic emission
that is generated by the hair cells in the cochlea. Data samples
are collected and averaged until specified measurement parameters
are achieved. A "Pass" or "Refer"
result is displayed in the LCD. The OAE and the noise floor
levels are shown on the LCD display on the front of the AuDX so
that the operator is able to analyze the results further if so desired.
AuDX is a medical instrument that provides information on the auditory
system of a patient. This data can be used for medical screening.
Therefore, the device is intended for use by health care professionals
or technicians who are trained and supervised by health care professionals
or accredited organizations.

Product
Overview and Description
AuDX is the ideal choice for implementing a hearing-screening program.
This small rechargeable battery-operated unit is the most portable
OAE system available today. Operation is simple. AuDX is easy to
learn, use, and maintain. To begin a test, the examiner presses
a series of buttons on the instrument. AuDX does the rest. Helpful
messages on the built-in display guide the operator to ensure a
good probe fit. Tests are stored in memory for review on the display,
or printing to the Bio-logic label printer connected directly to
the AuDX. No computer is required for testing or printing the results.
Using distortion
product otoacoustic emissions technology, AuDX is a highly sensitive tool
for detecting cochlear hearing loss. Screening is fast-- as brief as fifteen
seconds per ear under optimal conditions. Disposable costs are low, especially
compared to other screening technologies such as automated ABR. AuDX displays
a "Pass" or "Refer" result.
Complete test details are available if further interpretation is required.
With only a few steps to complete a screening, and no complicated software
to learn, the AuDX makes an effortless addition to an existing screening
program.
AuDX is available in several configurations, so that a practitioner can
select the system that best meets his/her program needs. AuDX I performs
a fixed screening OAE protocol, and retains the last ten tests in memory.
When connected to the AuDX I label printer, it can provide results on self-adhesive
labels for immediate attachment to medical records.
The portable unit requires little time to learn, and nurses, technicians,
pediatricians, family physicians and other trained personnel can administer
screenings. The lightweight device can be used for auditory screening on
subjects from infants through senior citizens.

a clean ear tip of appropriate size for the patient's ear
canal and install it on the probe. |
| 3. |
Insert
the ear tip securely into the patient's ear canal. |
| 4. |
Press
the "On" button on the AuDX unit.
|
| 5. |
When
the AuDX and software version message appears in the LCD display,
press the "DX" (SELECT) button to
initiate a test procedure. |
| 6. |
When
the message "TEST R EAR" appears in
the display area, record the unique test number assigned to
the test if necessary. If the ear being tested is the left
ear, press the down arrow button to display the "TEST
L EAR" message. |
| 7. |
When
the correct test ear is displayed on the LCD, press the "DX"
(SELECT) button to initiate the automated check fit, calibration
and DPOAE test or TEOAE test. |
| 8. |
When
the test is complete, the test number and "Pass"
or "Refer" result appear on the display
along with a "SEE DETAIL" message.
Press the "DX" (SELECT) button to
review and record the results. |

Hints for Successful Testing
|
| |
 |
Be
sure the ear is free of earwax (cerumen) or other debris prior to
testing.
|
| |
 |
Be
sure to clip the probe to the collar so that the probe does
not hit the ear canal wall.
|
| |
|
For
accurate test results, do not hold the probe in the patient's
ear.

Features
and Benefits
 |
No
Patient Response - Minimal cooperation is required,
making it ideal for use with young children, special needs
populations, and/or whenever there may be a language barrier.
Objective - The AuDX does
not rely on the child's response. The person performing the
screening does not have to interpret a pass/fail.
Compact and portable -
The unit is hand-held and operates for nine to ten continuous
hours of testing.
Comfortable, ergonomic design
- The unit weighs less than two pounds and features an
ergonomic grip and replaceable, self-adjusting hand strap
that accommodates all hand sizes.
Rugged construction -
The AuDX unit features an LCD display and electronics that
are shock mounted inside a housing to protect the unit. The
sealed unit helps keep out dirt.
Screen any age - The AuDX
can screen babies, children and adults.
Affordable - Disposable
costs are low, especially when compared to other screening
technologies such as automated ABR.

Frequently
Asked Questions
| Q: |
Where
is the off button? |
| A: |
There is
no off button. The unit automatically shuts off when not in
use.
|
| Q: |
The low battery indicator message appeared in the AuDX display;
what should be done? |
| A: |
The battery
should be charged. However, the unit may be used while it
is plugged into the charger.
|
| Q: |
Does
the unit need to be calibrated?
|
| A: |
No. There are no
industry standards for calibration of otoacoustic emissions screening
equipment. However, Bio-logic recommends an annual calibration check
for all OAE systems. With advanced arrangements, this calibration
can be performed with a 48-hour turn around time during a regular
work week.
|
| Q: |
On
what age group may the AuDX be used?
|
| A: |
Screening
can be conducted on any age group. However, when testing neonates,
it is recommended that testing be conducted on babies at least
twenty-four hours old. (Residual fluid may still be in the
ear canal of newborns less than twenty-hours old and false
positive results may occur.)
|
| Q: |
How
is the AuDX cleaned?
|
| A: |
The tips
are disposable, so a new tip should be used with each patient.
The probe can be cleaned with supplied probe cleaners when
needed.
|
| Q: |
Where
is the serial number and account number of the AuDX?
|
| A: |
The serial
number and account numbers are located on a label on the back
of the AuDX unit.
|
| Q: |
How
many tests can be printed on a roll of printer labels? |
| A: |
Approximately
300 tests can be printed on one printer roll.
|
| Q: |
Where
can accessories and printer labels for the AuDX be purchased? |
| A: |
They can be ordered
from School Health Corporation on line @ www.schoolhealth.com or by
dialing the toll free number at (800)
323-1305. |
