HANOVER PARK, Ill.--Seven Bridges Golf Club, a championship 18-hole course in Woodridge, recently purchased an automated external defibrillator (AED), making it one of the few courses that offers this survival device to golfers.

The AED was purchased from Sports Health, a Division of School Health Corporation, the number one provider of medical equipment and supplies for the sports medicine and school health industry.

Every year, cardiac arrests claim 350,000 lives in the United States. Golf courses rank as one of the top five locations for victims to suffer from sudden cardiac arrests. Defibrillators can help save lives by restarting a stopped heart with an electric shock.

"Sudden cardiac arrest can occur anywhere," says Don Ferreri, Golf Course Supervisor. "While this has never happened on our course, it doesn't mean we shouldn't be prepared. Having an AED on site is important to our golfers."

Ferrari says that plans are underway to incorporate the new AED into the Club's emergency plan. "Our entire staff will be trained on how to use the device. We'll also
make sure that it's centrally located and easily accessible. The faster we can respond to cardiac emergencies, the better the chances for survival."

"Thanks to improved technology, automated external defibrillators are now portable and easy to use," said Peter Hovorka, National Sales Manager of Sports Health/Econoline. "The operation is almost intuitive."

Nowadays, automated external defibrillators are commonplace in police cars and fire trucks. They are also standard on many airplanes and in airports, such as Chicago O'Hare International Airport. An increasing number of park and school districts and other public facilities are purchasing automatic external defibrillators for cardiac emergencies, according to Sports Health/Econoline. "More organizations are realizing the benefits of having an AED on site," noted Hovorka.

School Health Corporation is the parent company for Sports Health/Econoline. Founded in 1950, School Health achieved success in the industry by focusing on the needs of its customers and by broadening its product line to include a wide variety of medical supplies.

Located in Hanover Park, Ill., School Health Corporation has a 50,000 square-foot, brick and mortar facility well equipped to fulfill orders made through its Web site, healthgiant.com, and through its printed catalogs.
